Moving homes can be fun but also difiicult. It isn’t made any easier when you move from a bigger place to a smaller one. It can get quite stressful just figuring out how to get everything done.
Here’s what works for me:
Step 1: Get organized and prioritize. It’s a lot easier to pack when you know if something is necessary or not. For example, no need to pack the creepy statues or the bird bath when you have a teeny tiny place and no garden.
Set 2: Secure your overnight stuff. Make sure that you have a bag ready to hold your change of clothes and personal necessities. If there’s any delays in the delivery of your stuff, you’ll still have something to wear.
Step 3: Use all your existing bags and boxes. Think of it like packing fo a vacation trip. This is the perfect time to get that luggage in use. No need to buy boxes if you recycle the grocery boxes (if your local store gives them out).
Step 4: Make sure you have enough packaging tape, saran wrap and zip lock bags. These are major time and effort savers.
Step 5: Take this time to do spring cleaning. You are bound to find a number of things which you don’t wear and really don’t (or can’t) use anymore. You probably have sentimental reasons for not wanting to get rid of it but this is the time to be practical. Create piles for items to donate, dispose or put into storage (if you rally MUST have to keep it).
Step 6: Get the kids involved. They are never too young to be part of the crew. Make it a family activity. Something as simple as keeping the dogs from underfoot or packing their own books into boxes are a big help.
Most importantly, give your self senough time to get everything done. Most people think packing is done overnight and yes, it can be done that way. The more lead time you give yourself though, the easier it will be to get ready.
